Fractal: The Whole in Every Part: 10th Anniversary Commemorative Exhibition of THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE
Ten years after its foundation in Luanda and five years after opening in Lisbon, THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE celebrates a decade of activity with Fractal: The Whole in Every Part, an exhibition conceived specifically to mark the occasion and reflect on the gallery’s trajectory through what has most profoundly shaped it: a curatorial practice grounded in research, the construction of relationships, and the circulation of knowledge between artists, geographies and contexts.
The exhibition moves away from the conventional model of a retrospective. Rather than chronologically organising ten years of history, it seeks to recognise the patterns, concerns and relationships that have re-emerged, in different configurations, throughout the gallery’s programme, and to consider how they may continue to generate new developments.
The title draws on the concept of the fractal as a structure in which the same logic reappears at different scales, producing singular configurations. Applied to the trajectory of THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE, this principle makes it possible to observe how exhibitions, artists and autonomous projects have successively revisited and transformed certain questions, constructing a recognisable identity without fixing it within a single aesthetic, geography or language.
It is also through this logic that the exhibition takes shape. To mark its tenth anniversary, THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE activates the network of relationships that has contributed to shaping its trajectory and invites it to expand. Artists, curators, collectors, thinkers, partners and other figures are invited to identify artistic practices they consider urgent, relevant or necessary in the present. This gesture introduces a prospective dimension into the commemorative exhibition.
In this process, the elementary unit of the fractal is the encounter. The network does not replace curatorial practice; it activates and nourishes it. This relational architecture becomes both an object of reflection and curatorial material. The genealogy of the encounters that lead to the exhibition makes visible a dimension of the art system that is often left unspoken: the connections through which works, ideas and practices circulate, are discovered and enter into relation.
The proposal also returns to the question embedded in the very name THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE, which emerges in opposition to the concept of the white cube, historically associated with the promise of neutrality. In the face of an art system historically structured through centres and peripheries, mechanisms of legitimation, visibilities and absences, the fractal structure offers a way of thinking about the gallery as a polycentric and permeable configuration, in which different points within the network can generate new relationships, produce knowledge and bring other forms of centrality into view.
In celebrating ten years, THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE thus recognises the ecosystem that has made its trajectory possible while simultaneously creating the conditions for that same ecosystem to continue transforming it. The anniversary becomes a moment of recognition and openness: ten years of history become the point from which to consider what that history may yet produce.
