Helena Obersteiner Brazil, b. 1993

Overview

Helena Obersteiner is a Brazilian visual artist, educator and researcher. She lives and works in Évora. Her artistic practice takes drawing as a means of presence and a way of establishing relationships with the world and with others, developing along two complementary strands.

The first explores how the graphic language of drawing on paper can extend into the textile realm, translating the gesture of observational drawing into tapestry. This material and formal investigation was further developed and consolidated in her solo exhibition Nebulosa Solar (2026).

In the second strand, drawing takes on a collective dimension through desenhos feios (ugly drawings), an artistic and educational project she founded in 2018. The project proposes error and imperfection as forms of critical thinking and self-recognition. Developed in a range of educational and cultural contexts, it has been presented at institutions including MASP – Museu de Arte de São Paulo, MAM-SP – Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, Centro Cultural São Paulo, Caixa Cultural, Casa Museu Ema Klabin and SESC. It is also the subject of her Master's research in Arts at PPGArtes/UNESP.
