Osvaldo Ferreira Angola, b. 1980

Overview

Osvaldo Ferreira (b. 1980, Angola) explores themes associated with the everyday life of the Angolan society, evidencing an intergenerational continuity / discontinuity with regard to social experiences.

His work, primarily constituted of paintings, often integrates chromatic and material elements that refer to the African textile tradition of exuberant colors. With this, he aims to emphasize the presence of Africa’s cultural and social heritage – a continent that, through colonization and globalization, witnessed successive processes of appropriation and cultural manipulation, triggering involuntary miscegenation and the imposition of a system that degenerates the continent’s identity.

In 2019, Osvaldo was one of the first artists to complete a higher education in Visual Arts within the Angolan territory (Instituto Superior de Artes - ISARTES). Since 2020, his work has been represented by the gallery THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE. As a result, his visibility has been growing in Africa and internationally over the last year. Namely, Osvaldo Ferreira was recently awarded one of the most important distinctions in the artistic area in Angola: the ENSA Art 2020 Painting Grand Prize.

Having already participated in the 2021 edition of the Cape Town Art Fair, the artist will again be present in 2022. He is also preparing an artist residency in Lisbon in 2022 and was invited to be the first artist to do an artistic residency with the NESR Art Foundation. His work is integrated into several international collections in the United States of America, Israel, Italy, Romania, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Portugal.
