Anchored in the pan-African framework that underpins FNB Art Joburg, THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE presents Decolonial Perspectives: a project developed and curated specifically for the 2026 edition of the fair, which seeks to generate a dialogue between countries with colonial and historical affinities, reflecting on the concept of decoloniality. The aim is to promote a reflection on how contemporary African art has been asserting itself on a global scale. This assertion has been validated through a disruptive discursive position within the context of a postcolonial debate, which for decades has been marked by a certain blind Eurocentrism — a deeply rooted theorization stemming from the processes of occupation and partitioning of African territories by colonizing powers, who produced a unilateral interpretation of their influence on the cultural and artistic constitution of the colonized countries.
The project reflects on the emergence of a critical vision of colonialism and on the importance that the African diaspora — embodied in the works of Amadeo Carvalho (Cape Verde), Daniela Ribeiro (Angola), Ibrahim Bemba Kébé (Mali), Opeyemi Olukotun (Nigeria), Osvaldo Ferreira (Angola), René Tavares (Sao Tome and Principe) and Sanjo Lawal (Nigeria) — as well as curatorial projects, research, and documentary studies more broadly, assume in the production of a renewed historical discourse on contemporary art. The presentation consists predominantly of new and previously unseen works, conceived specifically within the conceptual framework of the project.

ABOUT THE GALLERY
THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE is an international contemporary art gallery, founded in Luanda in 2016 and based in Lisbon, Portugal. Through the representation and collaboration with both national and international artists, whether established or emerging, the gallery presents a program focused on relevant narratives and debates, associated with the European context and the Global South. With a pioneering spirit of decompartmentalization and inclusion, favoring intercultural dialogues, it is the first African gallery in Portugal to open its collaborative circle to both local artists and artistic productions from the Global South, including Brazil and non-Lusophone African countries. The gallery maintains a regular and significant presence at major international art fairs.
