René Tavares has been selected to participate in Sharjah Biennial 17, one of the world's foremost international contemporary art events, under the title "What remains, sits restive". Invited by curators Paula Nascimento and Angela Harutyunyan, the São Toméan artist joins 109 participants whose practices engage with the Biennial's central themes of historical memory, cultural residues, and the enduring intersections between past and present, while exploring the afterlives of socialist modernity and anti-colonial struggles from diverse global perspectives.
Born in São Tomé and Príncipe and based in Lisbon, René Tavares has developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning painting, drawing, installation, and archival research. His work examines identity, colonial legacies, and cultural memory, creating spaces where personal and collective histories converge. His participation in Sharjah Biennial 17, on view from 21 January to 13 June 2027, further reflects the growing international recognition of his practice.
