Works by René Tavares on display at the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation in Évora

Selected works from the PLMJ collection
The Eugénio de Almeida Foundation Art and Culture Centre in Évora is hosting an exhibition entitled "Landscapes Change Places: Works from the PLMJ Foundation Collection".

Bringing together more than fifty works by artists from Portuguese-speaking countries (including René Tavares, from São Tomé and Príncipe) representing different generations and artistic expressions, the exhibition showcases the diversity of the PLMJ Foundation Collection.

René Tavares’ work is based on a process of research spanning through archives, photographs, and literature while bringing to the front stage themes related to historical and socio-political issues that affected different African countries. The artist’s work, that also includes  photography, video, and installation, evolves and expands in the form of projects and series that develop over time according to his own experiences of transition between different artistic languages, between the African and European continents, between insular and continental Africa, also between the local and the global, the individual and the collective.

For the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, this exhibition, created in collaboration with the PLMJ Foundation, reflects "the importance of partnerships with leading institutions, resulting in a more inclusive, plural and comprehensive programme that gives everyone the chance to experience contemporary art and engage with the issues it raises in modern society".

Curator João Silvério borrowed the title of the project from the Évora poet Manuel Gusmão. It is based on a vision of the territory as a visual and social body in constant change, and is akin to a poetic idea of landscape. The art collection serves as a backdrop and, at the same time, is a transforming agent of the cultural universe of the PLMJ Foundation project. Currently, the project has a connection to the diverse territory of the Alentejo, specifically Évora.

The exhibition will be open from 28 February to 30 August 2026, from Tuesday to Sunday, 10–13h and 14–18h (until 19h from May onwards) at the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation's Centre for Art and Culture in Évora. Admission is free.
