Uólofe Griot Angola, 1989

Présentation
Uólofe Griot is an ode to Angolan identity and the complexity that surrounds its imagistic construction. His creative process is deeply rooted in the ideograms and mythologies of different cultures.

Through the masterful use of scarifications, his intervened characters are transformed into ethereal figures, embodying the fluidity of Angolan identity, often neglected in everyday life. These symbols, delicately shaped like lace, pay homage to the rites of the many local tribes, bringing to life the forgotten echoes of Angolanity.

In a society marked by the trauma of the colonial appropriation of its visual identity elements, Uólofe Griot's work profoundly challenges the established taboos. It bears witness to the power of visual language in the course of history and in contemporary times, a celebration of heritage and a profound reflection on tradition.
