On July 11th, Portuguese artist António Faria opens a new solo exhibition at the Convento dos Capuchos in Almada, where it will remain on view until November 21st. Conceived specifically for the historic site, the exhibition brings together a body of work that establishes a dialogue between vegetal and animal imagery, art history and the human condition.
Drawing on references ranging from Francisco Goya to Luís de Camões' celebrated verse, "bicho da terra tão pequeno" ("so small a creature of the earth"), the exhibition invites viewers to reflect on humanity's place within the natural world and on the relationships of power, vulnerability and coexistence that bind all forms of life. Through symbolic motifs, compositions that evoke the tradition of still life, and an aesthetic oscillating between the ornamental, the kitsch and the grotesque, António Faria constructs a visual universe in which humour, irony and unease coexist.
