In the context of 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair Marrakech , in addition to a selection of unpublished works, THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE is pleased to present a limited edition of fifty signed and numbered copies of the work "Warrior and Egungun" (2023) BY Cássio Markowski.
The piece is part of the series "The Night Doesn't Fall Asleep In Women's Eyes”, composed of an unprecedented body of work that stems from a research project on memory and ancestry. Through drawing and painting, Markowski creates a pictorial, narrative and intellectual space in which the female figure carries the central stage and is surrounded by a concrete iconography that uses elements taken from the universe of Brazilian fauna and flora and Yoruba culture. Ancestral masks appear in this context as attributes of a neglected collective memory.
