Lizette Chirrime Mozambique, 1973
Lizette Chirrime stands out for the creation of large-scale textile works that embody figurative and abstract shapes rendered in embroidery, collage of Shwe-shwe print fabrics, and other African clothing-related prints on the continent. Her works often incorporate autobiographical aspects, reflecting her life course and dreams. It has a strong inclination for the use of symbols, abstracting shapes for their essential features. “These abstract forms evoke the human body and my identity practice where I reshape my self-image and transcend a painful education that left me shattered and broken. I literally «sewed» myself. These «liberated souls» are portrayed «dancing» on screen, evoking the image of well-dressed African women celebrating"- she says
