Ana Malta Awarded MEXTO Acquisition Prize at ARCO Lisboa 2025

MEXTO, 2 June 2025
As part of the 2025 edition of ARCO Lisboa, the MEXTO Property Investment Acquisition Prize was awarded to artist Ana Malta, represented by the gallery THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE.

The prize, part of the official awards program of the fair, recognises artists whose work stands out for its originality, consistency, and critical relevance within the contemporary art landscape. The awarded work “Longe de titubear” was featured in the gallery’s curatorial project Out of Bounds, presented at Cordoaria Nacional.

Ana Malta’s practice explores the relationship between the body and domestic space, employing a vibrant chromatic palette and richly textured compositions. Her work transforms personal memory into visual narratives of collective resonance, engaging with notions of belonging, identity, and intimacy.

Out of Bounds brought together artists from Portugal, Lusophone Africa, and the Global South, fostering intercultural dialogues while challenging the reductive frameworks often imposed on African and diasporic African art. The curatorial proposal underscores the fluidity of cultural boundaries and invites new interpretations of tradition and shared memory within a global contemporary context.

The awarding of this prize to Ana Malta represents not only recognition of her individual practice but also a strong endorsement of THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE’s curatorial positioning—committed to amplifying critical, cross-cultural artistic discourses.
