This is a unique opportunity to embark on a very special journey into her creative universe and to get closer to her work, exploring the creative process and inspirations that brought "Matriz" to life, directly through Susana Cereja's eyes.
Bringing together 17 mostly unpublished works produced by the artist over the last three years, the "Matriz" exhibition reflects the multidisciplinary nature of a creative process in which research, diversity and versatility of media are paramount.
Through this exhibition, Susana Cereja presents us with a fresh look at the recovery and development of ancestral methods of artistic production, with the central object being the design and technique of the Arraiolos stitch - traditionally used in the production of Portuguese tapestry - which the artist recovers for the field of contemporary art, restoring to it the place of excellence it once occupied in local culture.
Susana Cereja conceives here a territory of intricate connections between the past and the present, presenting a work impregnated with technique, tradition, history and collective memory. In this context, the decursive technique of community work becomes a vehicle for mythological reinterpretation where stories of deities and primordial forces are interwoven, contributing in contemporary times to the allegorical construction of new myths, woven into the fabric of human consciousness.
