As part of the opening of Impermanentia, the solo exhibition by Portuguese artist Ana Malta, taking place on Saturday, November 15, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., the gallery will present the happening Papel de Parede (Wallpaper).
The collaborative work, conceived by the artistic collective Vês.Três—comprising Ana Malta, Madalena Pequito, and Maria de Brito Matias—will be activated by the three artists at around 7:30 p.m.
Composed of a continuous ten-metre-long painted roll, the work is sold by the metre throughout the exhibition, as a performative critique of the commodification of art, rampant consumerism, and the housing accessibility crisis that marks contemporary Portugal.
The title—at once mundane and ironic—transforms the notion of “wallpaper” into a visual metaphor for the aesthetic surface as commodity, while also functioning as a collective palimpsest in which gestures, intentions, and identities overlap.
At once object and action, Papel de Parede expands the dialogue between creation, value, and critique, inviting reflection on the transience of contemporary cultural and economic systems.
