Luís Damião - Photography: Solo Show: Luís Damião
Past exhibition
Overview
THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE Art Gallery presents from December 18 to January 31, 2020, a solo exhibition by the Angolan artist Luís Damião.
The exhibition includes a set of 20 unpublished works, made over the last year, which reflect Luís Damião's latest production process in the field of artistic photography practice. His work has a strong experimental and research component, focusing on the development of new means of technical production, support, and presentation.
Luís Damião is part of an emerging generation of artists who launch fresh perspectives on the subject of traditional photographic compositions in the age of digital technology and image manipulation. The references of its aesthetic construction refer to the universe of documentary photography, but with simultaneous use of an elaborate staging of images. The introduction of this performative perspective results in a process of recurring tinting of the division between what is documentary and what is fiction and usually happens to emphasize, through photography, proposals for reflection on social and political experiences in the urban context of Luanda.
The solo show that This Is Not a White Cube art gallery presents now stems from the intense curatorial work that the structure has been undertaking around the work of Luís Damião. It is also in this context that the author presents his work at the international exhibition “Intersections - Within the Global South”, which is taking place at the Banco Económico Gallery, in Luanda and at the latest edition of the "Bamako Encounters", the Photography and Video Biennial in Mali.
