Susana Cereja Portugal, b. 1992
Overview
Susana Cereja began her career in architecture, studying in Lisbon and spending time in Germany from 2011 to 2016. During this period, she immersed herself in ancient artistic production techniques and discovered her true calling in Arraiolos tapestry. Her artistic journey also led her to explore illustration, drawing, and printmaking at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Ar.co – Center for Art and Visual Communication, respectively.
While studying architecture, Susana started her professional career as an architect in the studio of artist Joana Vasconcelos, where she worked for five years. Despite her architectural endeavors, her passion for artistic expression flourished, leading to exhibitions across various European cities, including Lisbon, Algarve, Águeda, Cáceres, Badajoz, London, Tallinn, and Kranj.
Susana's work is deeply influenced by themes of femininity, the quest for freedom, and the essence of life itself. She is known for her ability to blend diverse artistic techniques, from printmaking to Arraiolos tapestry, with a special emphasis on emotional expression. Her passion for the beauty of materials and her ability to reinterpret them in a contemporary context are evident in her work, which often addresses profound emotions and human condition issues.
In 2022, Susana participated in an artistic residency in Tallinn, Estonia, and in 2023, she was a featured artist at the BIEN International Textile Art Biennial in Kranj, Slovenia.
Beyond her regular work, Susana is dedicated to community art projects, making a significant local impact. A notable example is her recent project in Vila do Torrão, Portugal, where she collaborated with community members aged 45 to 82. Over a month, they created a collective piece involving nearly twenty participants.
Susana Cereja's multifaceted approach to art, combining traditional and contemporary techniques, and her commitment to community engagement, make her a distinctive and influential artist in the contemporary art scene.
