Overview
The artist Jacira da Conceição was born in Chão Bom, Santiago Island, Cape Verde. She currently lives and works in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal, since 2017. In 2015, she began her journey in ceramic practices through the relationship she established with traditional Cape Verdean pottery. In 2009 he travelled for the first time outside Cape Verde. For a year, he cycled across the South American continent. In the Brazilian state of Maranhão, she lived for a month in the Quilombo of Itamatatiua, where she came into contact with local potters, learning new techniques and acquiring knowledge that influenced her later works. Her artistic practice explores issues of identity, race, beauty, insularity and feminism, incorporating materials and forms traditionally associated with Cape Verdean art. In this way, she seeks to contribute to the affirmation of the African woman artist in the contemporary art world.
