Overview
Abraão Vicente is a trained sociologist, and a self-taught painter and photographer with exhibitions in several countries and works featured in renowned private collections. He was born in the interior of Santiago Island, Cape Verde, into a large family as the sixth of eight siblings. At home, he developed a love for literature and the arts, inspired by his father and grandfather, both scholars of the Creole language and local culture.
 
He studied in the towns of Assomada and Praia, and at eighteen moved to Lisbon, where he earned a sociology degree from NOVA University Lisbon, with a thesis on the development of the artistic field in 20th-century Portugal. He also spent time in Barcelona, participating in both solo and group exhibitions and working as a programmer and artist at the experimental art space Miscelánea.
 
Currently living in Cape Verde, he has worked as a journalist and is now a Member of the National Parliament, a social activist, and a columnist. He has published several works, including: O Trampolim (novel, 2010), E de repente a noite (poetry, 2012), Traços Rosa Choque (chronicles, 2012), 1980 Labirintos (prose poetry, 2013), and contributed to the short story collection Dez Contos para Ler Sentado (2012).
 
He has also worked as a journalist and columnist for the newspaper A Nação, and created and hosted four television programs for RTC and RTP: Casa da Cultura, 180 Graus, Intimidades, and Nha Terra Nha Cretcheu. He currently serves as a Member of the National Parliament of Cape Verde.
