1-54 CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN ART FAIR MARRAKECH 2023: Solo Show: Maya-Inès Touam

9 - 12 February 2023
1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair is delighted to announce its in-person return to Marrakech after three years, set to take place over four days from 9 – 12 February 2023 (9 & 10 - VIP & Press days, by invitation). Under the painted cedar wood ceilings of La Mamounia, the fair will be bringing together 20 galleries from across the world to present the work of over 60 African and diaspora artists.

In this year's edition, THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE Gallery will present a solo and site-specific project - "Replica" - by Maya-Inès Touam. Born in France to Algerian parents, Maya’s work sits between two shores of the Mediterranean, exploring an oriental aesthetic, not from a neo-orientalist point of view, but from her own point of view as the granddaughter of emigrants.

Through this project, developed and curated specifically for 1-54 Marrakech 2023, the gallery aims to promote a reflection on the concepts of decoloniality, cultural heritage, identity, and on how contemporary African art has been affirming itself on a global scale. Specifically, the project explores how the new global female-led art restoration movements are reshaping the canon and the art ecosystem.

We look forward to seeing you in Marrakech in February 2023!
